What are dental cavities?

A dental cavity is a hole in the tooth that is caused by microbial decay.Decay occurs when 'plaque' , the sticky substance that forms on the teeth, combines with the sugars and starches of the food we eat. This combination produces acids that attack tooth enamel thus causing decay.A cavity is usually seen as a black/brown discolouration on the tooth surface.
Dental cavities need immediate attention because a futher delay in the treatment can cause the decay to move further inside the tooth ,towards the underlying dental nerves, causing severe pain.
